Finding the right freelance graphic designer for your creative project is no small task. There are thousands of us all over the web, offering different styles, projects, specialties and results. However, spotting a suitable designer or illustrator for your project could be the difference between getting a successful result or getting halfway.
Okay so, how do we find the right designer for our creative project? Here are four key points to keep in mind:
Portfolio
A good designer’s portfolio would show you in a glance the creator’s style and what kind of projects they can deliver. Is it the style you are looking for in your project? What do you think about the final results of their other projects?
Tip: Some great places to find creatives’ portfolios are Behance or Dribble.
Process
This is a really important thing to take into consideration, as no designer has the same working process. Make sure to ask about how their process is, the communication with the client, if they make video calls, their deadlines…
Experience
Career, education and experience many times affect designers’ prices, projects and interests. Although this doesn’t mean that age or experience equates to talent or knowledge. Keep in mind what kind of result and process are you looking for.
Compatibility
And yes, having good communication and a professional relationship with the designer is key too! You have to be able to trust the designer’s ability to deliver the work and communicate your vision and ideas with her/him in an open way. That’s why I always do first a Free Discovery Call with any potential client, so we can meet each other and see if I would be a good fit for the project.
Ultimately, my recommendation is to take some time to investigate styles, projects and portfolios. Then create a list of 3 – 5 designers to choose from. Don’t be afraid to ask them or sending an inquiry! I’m sure they would be more than happy of answering your questions.
